Toyota Camry 2002–2007 oil capacity: 2.4L vs V6 and the 2007 switch to 0W-20

How much oil each Camry engine takes, why only the 2007 2.4-liter and Hybrid moved to 0W-20, and which ATF goes in the automatic, with the manual page for every year.

Short answer: a 2002–2006 Camry takes SAE 5W-30. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder holds 3.8 L (4.0 US qt) with a new filter, and the 3.0 L and 3.3 L V6 hold 4.7 L (5.0 US qt). For 2007, Toyota moved the 2.4-liter, and the new Camry Hybrid, to 0W-20, and its capacity rose to 4.3 L (4.5 US qt). The new 3.5-liter V6 stayed on 5W-30 and takes 6.1 L (6.4 US qt).

Where to check (PDF page, counted from the start of the file):

  • 2002 manual: p. 278
  • 2003: p. 291
  • 2005: p. 339
  • 2006: p. 344
  • 2007: p. 415
  • 2007 Hybrid: p. 393

The engine codes are the ones these manuals print. The Camry Solara of the same years shares these engines and capacities: 3.8 L for the 2.4-liter through 2006, 4.3 L with 0W-20 in 2007, and 4.7 L with 5W-30 for the V6, including the 2007 Solara 3.3-liter. We have not reviewed a 2004 Camry manual, so the table makes no claim about 2004.

The 2007 switch to 0W-20 applies only to the four-cylinder

From 2002 to 2006, every Camry engine uses 5W-30. The quality grade printed beside it changes over the years:

  • 2002: API SJ or SL "Energy-Conserving", or ILSAC multigrade oil.
  • 2003 and 2005: API SL "Energy-Conserving", or ILSAC multigrade oil.
  • 2006: ILSAC multigrade oil only.

From 2003, the manuals say that if 5W-30 isn't available, 10W-30 may be used, but it should be replaced with 5W-30 at the next oil change. The 2002 manual instead warns that 10W-30 can make the engine hard to start in extremely low temperatures.

The 2007 manual splits the engines:

  • 2.4 L four-cylinder and Hybrid: "SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20 engine oil may be used. However, SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather."
  • 3.5 L V6: stays on 5W-30, with the same 10W-30 stopgap wording.

Common mix-ups:

  • "0W-20 for a 2007 Camry" is right for the 2.4-liter and the Hybrid only, not the V6.
  • A 2006 or older 2.4-liter takes 3.8 L, not the 2007 car's 4.3 L.
  • Check the engine on your registration or under the hood before you buy oil.

Oil filter and dipstick range

The owner's manuals do not print oil-filter part numbers. The WIX 2021 application catalog lists these filters:

  • WIX 57145 / 57145XP for the 2.4 L
  • WIX 51348 / 51348XP for the 3.0 L and 3.3 L V6
  • WIX 57047 / 57047XP for the 2007 3.5 L V6

Between the dipstick's low and full marks, the 2002 and 2005 manuals list 1.0 L (1.1 US qt) for the 2.4-liter and 1.5 L (1.6 US qt) for the V6. After a change, fill slightly under the listed amount, run the engine, wait, and top up to the full mark.

ATF WS and Type T-IV are different fluids, so use the one your year's manual names. The 2002–2003 Solara V6 automatics are an exception: their manuals specify DEXRON II/III ATF.

How we checked this

We read each figure from archived copies of Toyota's US Camry owner's manuals. Page numbers count from the start of each PDF. Each manual covers a production range, for example "2007 Camry from Oct. '06 production". The 2005 file prints form number OM33684U. The 2002 manual is a third-party reproduction; the others come from Toyota's publication site. Quart values are the manual's own conversions.
